Endangered species protection is a long argued debate in the United States. Environmental groups and their supporters strongly stand for species protection and subsequent land protections. However, individuals living near designated areas or concerned regarding how such designations will interfere with their livelihood often battle protection decisions. Such a storm is brewing when it comes to land for the mountain caribou.
The mountain caribou once called large expanses of North America and subsequently the United States home. Since 1984 the mountain caribou have been designated as protected under the endangered species list due to population decline and habitat loss. Currently there is estimated to be less than fifty mountain caribou remaining in the U.S.. Where this small herd of caribou resides is in a section of land in Idaho and crossing to Washington state.
